Lent is the six weeks or so leading up to Good Friday, when we reflect on the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert, when he said a big NO to self-serving and self-promotion and showed the way for us to do the same.
Some of us choose something to give up for Lent. This is not to impress God. God already loves us more than we can imagine. We give things up in order to become aware of how dependent we are on stuff (maybe alcohol, maybe chocolate, maybe social media or criticism – whatever we are ready to deal with at the time). As we free ourselves from those dependencies, with God’s help, we can move into our future with more freedom and generosity.
We start Lent with a reflective service of self-examination and repentance on Ash Wednesday:
Ash Wednesday Services, 14 Feb, 10am at All Saints, Chermside and 7pm at St Paul’s, Ashgrove.
